Our ears are super-complex, sensitive organs. The sounds they receive send vibrations from our eardrum to the inner ear, or cochlea. This odd-shaped organ is lined with delicate hair cells called stereocilia, which then send signals along our auditory nerve to our brain. Our brain then registers those sound in our conscious awareness – but sometimes those signals get warped – really, really warped, and we hear buzzing, whirring, whooshing, and other annoying sounds instead.
No one wants to live with ringing, buzzing, and whistling in their ears, not even rock stars! So how do you get rid of your tinnitus? What’s the best possible cure for this earth-shattering problem?
What Caused Your Tinnitus to Begin With?
Western medicine will tell you that your Tinnitus has no cure, except to have surgery to the inner ear to make the sound stop, to get rid of the sound that is causing your Tinnitus, or to simply clear the ear wax from your ears. Great advice, huh?
Your tinnitus may also be worsened by:
- A stiff neck or stiff jaws
- Joint disorders in the jaws
- Low blood circulation in the brain
- Accumulation of earwax
- High levels of cholesterol in the blood
- Cardiac ailments
- Infection in the ear, nose or throat
- Stiffening of the middle bone in the ear
Tinnitus is also known to be caused by either underlying Candida albicans or sub clinical Helicobacter pylori.
Pharmaceutical Medications for Tinnitus
What’s even more distressing is that a doctor will often prescribe anti-depressants for the ringing in your ears. Really. As if your ears were depressed!
This is quote shocking when we consider that the following anti-depressants (not to mention other medications given for diabetes, heart disease, and a host of other conditions) also cause tinnitus. They do so by causing ototoxicity – a big word meaning an over-toxic ear. The industry tries to minimize this, but it happens more often than many people would imagine.
Often-prescribed pharmaceutical medicines have been shown to have toxic effects on the cochleovestibular system (the cochlea within the ear that helps us to hear). The list includes aminoglycosides and other antibiotics, platinum-based chemotherapy medications, salicylates, quinine and loop diuretics, as well as:
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
- Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)
- And more
Another culprit, though not a medicine, is Aspartame, the sugar substitute that is in products like Nutra Sweet. This substance is not only highly carcinogenic, but is also linked to Tinnitus.
Stress and Tinnitus
Stress, another of the modern world’s ailments, adds to symptoms of Tinnitus. In fact, stress, which causes anxiety, is often experienced right alongside ringing or whirring in the ears. This creates a viscious feedback loop in the brain. The Tinnitus is caused by stress, but then the symptoms of Tinnitus cause stress themselves!
Many who suffer from this problem find that stress is their constant companion. By lowering stress, though, inflammation in the body is also lowered, which means hearing has a better chance of returning to normal.
These medications do not treat the underlying cause, and may even add to it, which is an imbalanced pH level in the body, and the accumulation of toxins in the ear, and the surrounding area.
Importance of Proper pH
The pH value of anything tells you if it is an acid, a base, or neutral.
- A pH of 0 indicates a high level of acidity.
- A pH of 7 is neutral.
- A pH of 14 is the most basic, or alkaline.
The body’s first line of defense against almost any disease is a proper pH balance. Disease can only form in an acidic body, which makes the environment favorable for the growth of bacteria, yeast, fungus, mold, viruses, and any other unwanted organisms – even cancerous cells.
The body works best at a slightly alkaline level, of about 7.4 on the pH scale. When we start to become more acidic, due to the foods we choose, our levels of stress, a sedentary lifestyle, environmental toxins, and other contributing factors, we create a lack of oxygen at the cellular level.
When our blood does not have enough oxygen within it, our cells starve of oxygen, too. When our blood is at 7.4 pH, it best delivers oxygen to our cells so that they can thrive.
Chinese Medicine for Tinnitus
TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) addresses Tinnitus with acupuncture or herbs to try to tonify the ears and organs (kidneys) associated with them. The only problem is that the very best acupuncturists will tell you that Tinnitus is best treated before it happens, not after it has already developed.
In Chinese medicine, the organ which governs the ears – the Kidney (with a capital ‘K’ to denote the organ-meridian system) is fundamentally more important. The Kidney is considered to be the source of the body’s inherited energy.
It is also regarded as the organ-meridian system that governs the structural integrity and function not only of the kidneys themselves but also the adrenal glands, ovaries, testes, brain, spinal cord, skeletal structure (especially the lumbar region), teeth, anus, urethra and inner ear. This means that you can’t heal the ears without healing the kidneys, first.
Practical Lifestyle Tips for Tinnitus
- If you are going to be around loud noises, wear earplugs.
- Avoid holding a cell phone or headset straight to your ear. Use an ear-jack instead so that you can reduce EMF radiation to your ears, face, and brain, and also control the volume better.
- Avoid exposing your ears to extreme cold or wind.
- Don’t use electronic “white noise” to fall asleep. Natural sounds like water falling, the ocean, rain, etc. are much better for your ears, and also your nervous system.
- If you also have gut problems, acidity or any dark or light skin patches, make sure you take 1 teaspoon castor oil each morning on an empty stomach to combat the fungi candida albicans. Tinnitus should resolve over a few weeks.
Diet for Tinnitus
There are many foods and herbs which can help tinnitus. Basically, you should aim to eat as many foods that detoxify the body as possible. Foods that help to balance the pH levels are also helpful. These can include, but are not limited to:
- Green Beans
- Swiss Chard
Avoid eating trans-fats, refined sugars, and refined carbs, sodas, sports drinks (high in sugar), caffeine, and alcohol as well. These greatly contribute to acidity in the body. You can also limit animal proteins to reduce acidity in the body.
Yoga for Tinnitus for Tinnitus
Yoga can help those who suffer from Tinnitus. It usually helps to improve the symptoms, and doesn’t get rid of it completely – but many people report getting great relief from practicing on a regular basis. The following poses can help to increase blood flow and reduce stress, but for a long-term solution, the body’s pH balance must be restored and toxicity lowered.
Triangle Pose – This posture opens the whole body. It opens the hips, hamstrings, chest, and allows blood to flow through the kidney meridians in the body – associated with the health of ears. You can see how it is practiced here.
Shoulderstand and Headstand – These are both more advanced yoga postures but they encourage lymph movement throughout the body and increase blood flow to the brain and the organs of the head – eyes, ears, nose, throat, etc. There are also modifications for shoulderstand so that you can try it if you are not as far along in your practice. You can see how to practice these postures here and here.
Deep Breathing – Yogic breathing will not only reduce stress, but also increase oxygenation of the blood and lower acidity in the body. You can try several different breathing exercises – called pranayama, from deep breathing to the breath of fire. Each has their own purpose and resulting effect on the body.
As a rule, for those wishing to detox and reduce stress, deep breathing is best.
Natural Medicines for Tinnitus
Finally, there are two herbal medicines made by Grocare that help to address the underlying cause of Tinnitus.
ACIDIM helps balance the body’s pH thereby clearing the toxins around the ear and giving the hair more breathing space. This enhances your hearing ability and helps to stop ringing.
ORONERV helps the nerve endings to be more receptive, thereby slowly healing tinnitus. Once the toxins are cleared and the nerve endings are rejuvenated, tinnitus slowly disappears.
ACIDIM and ORONERV help heal Tinnitus naturally, without any side effects.
While non-traditional forms of medicine have no side effects, they may also take a long time to affect the organ system which therefore changes the health of our auditory system. Your Tinnitus can start to get significantly better with Grocare’s natural medicines – and they can be used in conjunction with better lifestyle choices to heal that annoying ringing in your ears for good.
